Fly-by: Feminist Humor Kudos, plus a little narcissism

A message-board acquaintance of mine has a new blog, in which she logs the exploits of a misogynist asshat who works with her husband, who counters this dude’s (named Dan) stupidity and bigotry with (generally) calm yet firm, logical replies, taking the wind out of Dan’s sails.

The FAQ page “What is a Dan?” is comedy gold.

Go visit, and enjoy: The Dan Chronicles

Edited to add: Someone googled my username here (and on various boards) and found this blog. I’m just a little flattered someone was googling me. ^_^

More Geek Love.

Just a quick one this time: thanks to a new poster at the IBTP message boards, I’ve been introduced to something I should have seriously missed* before now: Feminst SciFi - The Blog!(TM)

So far, it’s good. Touches on just about everything: on the front page right now are posts about BSG: Razor, the passing of Verity Lambert**, aliens and sex/gender (not sex with aliens, which is more typical), and a bit about Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse.

I’m looking forward to more reading. (Although I still have to see Razor. Bah for me being so wiped out the Saturday after Thanksgiving I didn’t even remember it was on that night.)

*I’d even asked for recommendations for feminist/not-horribly-misogynist scifi lit on said boards. Didn’t even occur to me there’d be a blog about it somewhere. I really am clueless sometimes. Or just so used to SciFi==Teh Menz Wurld, kthxbai.***

**Which I knew about, amazingly, even though I’m not the Dr. Who fan I used to be. Thanks Richie!

Blogroll Love, and Calling Out The Trolls; plus Bonus LOLcat!

The delightfully blaming Cara-he has a new blog, and she’s blogrolled me AND reprinted one of my more ranty posts. I’m flattered and abashed and proud and everything!

It was a happy happy thing to wake up to this morning.

The other comment sitting in the moderation queue wasn’t quite as fun, at least not as ego-bloating. On an old post (I was immediately suspicious), I saw that it was made by an actual blogger, and wasn’t the typical spammity spam I get on rants three months old.

So I decided to give it a whirl. I approved the comment, and replied. Have a look, if you like.

EDITED to add this:

Indy Cat

I knew it came from somewhere.

In relation to my next-to-most-recent post that happened to mention the madonna-whore dichotomy, a poster, puckrockhockeymom, made mention of it while she waxed eloquent on a Feministe post that was itself inspired by a PostSecret postcard which read “My greatest fear is that I’m good enough to f*ck but not good enough to love”. So I was cruising through referrers to my blog…

… and I came across this:

Viking Fish, (c) Vanessa of Plucky Punk
The Viking Fish Store
.

This just makes me happy. The fish-parody thing has been done to death, but this one was actually new to me. And accurate, at least up until 1000 C.E.

So, in the interests of beating a dead horse, post your favorite fishies here!

hot teen action

So, is getting a bunch of spam advertising porn a sign I’m doing things right or what?

Seriously, this blog must have graduated or something. I only just to get ads for male sexual enhancement.

UPDATE (2007-04-25 08:24):

On a related note, Twisty takes note of the responsibility of porn has in maintaining rape culture.

As Vera Venom comments:

Simply put - people saw the *men* tortured at Aru Gharib and they were horrified!! Horrified!!

They see women tortured in brutal porn and it’s sexysexy!

I <3 her, muchly.

It’s the little things.

It’s always chicken butt.

Like this terribly accurate depiction of the early days of our marriage. Yes, really. [link]

Do go see him. David Malki ! is also the creator of what is possibly my favorite Alien loves Predator strip ever.

ALSO: I discovered landoverbaptist.org today. Yay for NSFW parody sites.

Note: In typing landoverbaptist.org the first time, I transposed two letters. You guess which ones.

ALSO, again: I’m a little hacked at WordPress making full CSS customization something you pay for. I mean, what gives? Even if I just want to make slight color alterations… *sigh*.

AUCH: Facebook is occasionally quite entertaining, like when this happens:

Which came first?

(Chuck is an acquaintance from elementary school — and his wife, Alice, had a FB account long before he did. He just added me as a friend tonight, and I was #4, so I’m guessing his account is brand-spankin-new.)

What do you think of *me*? [via Thinking Girl]

This is a meme, of sorts. Thinking Girl did this last Friday, and I stole her title played around with it, and made my own Johari window.

For those of you, who, like me, wouldn’t know what this is before going to the site: It’s another of those personality things (which I love to play around with) but this is a ‘you pick adjectives to describe yourself, then let others choose too, and see where they overlap’ type of thing.

So, for my edification: my interactive Johari window. Please play around and tell me what you think.

Oh! And if you make one of your own, post a li’l comment with the linky linky, please. ^^

EDIT: Random note — I imported my Blogger posts to this site (all 667 of them!) and I will be going through them to take out stuff I don’t want here. It was, quite frankly, an experiment, and primarily for the purpose of keeping all my stuff in one place. I may add more sometime, but for now I’ve got enough to deal with in this one Blogger account. ^^

What will we do without Battlestar? + R.I.P.

Apparently, we’ll be playing a game. Or at least, a demo.

Nine months is a long time to wait for what is ostensibly the final season in a (for the most part) fantastic series, the first one I’ve watched loyally since the late 80s.* Finding out that the final season wouldn’t begin until January was just the opportunity (or possibly, just the marketing angle) for some folks who are making a flight simulator based on the new series.

Now, I’m usually a strategy game geek (most notably the Civilization series) but this game touches my geeky sensibilities in just such a way that I am tempted to try this one out, as soon as I get a minute. It’s, well, it looks great so far, although I only piddled around in the menus. The design is logical, the navigation is clear, and the visuals true to the BSG aesthetic. The 3-D modeling (using Truespace) looks fantastic in the screen shots. All I can say is there must be a lot of incredibly talented people working on this project.

A demo of Beyond the Red Line is available on all three major OS structures (PC, Mac and Linux) and my only complaint with the demo website is the complete lack of system reqs. My dearest one tried to download it to the laptop which is still running Mac OS 10.3.9, and it wouldn’t run, but works fine on the desktop, which is at 10.4.9.

A review of the game (demo) will follow if I decide to play it in the near future.

AND: Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday at the age of 84. Most know him for his longer works like Slaughterhouse Five, but I was introduced to him in English class with Harrison Bergeron. If you haven’t read HB, I suggest you do. It’s a pretty good illustration of the patriarchy, for one thing, whether or not Mr. Vonnegut intended that.

Requiescat in pace.

*There were three shows then: The Simpsons, ST:TNG and Quantum Leap.**
**Dean Stockwell’s presence in BSG just makes me happy.

God’s a bad, bad…

Holy. Crap.

I get this in my inbox, from my dearest one:

Play Track 5, “hand of the almighty,” and stick with it past your initial revulsion…
>> http://cdbaby.com/cd/johnrbutler

I suggest you do it too. Abso-friggin-WRONG. I haven’t laughed this hard in weeks (no exaggeration)!

Oh, and as a P.S.: I got official approval to add a couple more letters after my name today — I passed the M.A. oral exams. Woot!
